The Whaleback Lighthouse—built of gray granite blocks—is situated on the northeast side of Portsmouth Harbor. When constructed between 1829 and 1831, the lighthouse could not withstand the extreme weather conditions and had to be rebuilt. In 1872, the new tower was assembled in a style similar to the Eddystone Light in England. One of the best views of the light is from Fort Foster in Kittery Point.
